Britain Prepared to Utilize Seized Russian Assets to Support the Ukrainian War Effort
The United Kingdom is prepared to move forward with using the total value of frozen Russian assets to support the Ukrainian war effort, PM Sir Keir Starmer has announced.
In a shared declaration, the heads of state of the Britain, the French Republic, and Germany asserted that this coordinated action would increase strain on Russia's leader Vladimir Putin and persuade the Russian Federation to participate in talks.
They added that the decision would be carried out in close cooperation with the US.
United Kingdom restrictions have immobilized over £25bn of Russia's funds since the Russian government began its full-scale invasion against the Ukrainian nation in 2022. But, until now, funds sent to the Ukrainian government using Russian holdings had exclusively been drawn from earnings and returns earned on them.
Sir Keir assured Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky that the Britain, France, and the Federal Republic of Germany were united in their desire to drive progress toward utilizing the total worth of the immobilized Moscow's national holdings to end the war.
He added that further measures over the next period would apply more pressure on Moscow.
This statement comes after EU leaders convened in Copenhagen last week to debate utilizing immobilized Russia's assets for a €140 billion loan to Ukraine.
In the previous month, US President Donald Trump encouraged international partners to confiscate or utilize frozen Russia's funds, as reported by media sources.
The total of seized Russian holdings in the European Union is estimated to be nearly €211bn.
President Zelensky encourages UK's Sir Keir Starmer to join the Purl program
The Russian government carried out widespread aerial attacks throughout Ukraine on that day, leading to blackouts in large parts of the capital city, the city, and multiple additional areas.
Two people were lost their lives and no fewer than 20 people were hurt in the strike, authorities in Ukraine stated.
In a update on X subsequent to the incident, Zelensky wrote that the strategic strike targeted non-military and power facilities.
"What's needed is not mere statements but firm measures - from the US, the European Union, and the seven nations - in supplying defense mechanisms and applying sanctions," he stated.
"Every sanction decision undermines Moscow's military apparatus," Zelensky declared, in a separate post.
In the same period, Zelensky informed reporters he would press Sir Keir to enter the Purl programme, under which alliance members buy military equipment from the America to give to Ukraine.
While commending the United Kingdom's consistent assistance for the Ukrainian government, he noted it should send a clear signal that it would take part in the initiative, as well as enforce more measures on Moscow.
