Jair Bolsonaro arrested after being considered a flight risk

The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under house arrest.

The ex-president was found guilty of plotting a government overthrow in last fall and given more than over two decades in jail, but he was staying under home detention pending appeals.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after recent developments emerged.

This encompassed trying to remove his tracking device and a call for a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a possible escape.

Court Filing Details Escape Concerns

In a filing authorising the detention, the magistrate said data from the unit overseeing Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the former leader's "intention to break the electronic ankle bracelet to ensure success in his getaway".

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the confusion caused by the protest called by his child.

His child, his son Flávio, who holds office as a senator, called for a assembly of his followers near the former president's residence to take place on the weekend.

The senator wrote on digital networks on last Friday: "Are you going to fight for your country, or watch it all from your smartphone there on your settee? I invite you to struggle with us."

He said the gathering would be so backers could "pray for his health and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our country."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of the judge's ruling was the possibility of the former president's move to embassies near the home, considering that the probes revealed a background of arranging to ask for protection through a consular facility", a declaration said.

The judicial paperwork emphasizes that the American diplomatic mission in the federal district, Brazil's capital, is located around approximately 13 kilometers from Bolsonaro's home.

Worldwide Consequences

Bolsonaro's legal woes have generated frustration from fellow conservative nationalist American leader Donald Trump, leading him to impose a 50% tariff on imports of Brazilian goods.

Bolsonaro is being detained in a Federal Police station in Brasilia and will have a detention review on the next day.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on the previous day that the former president's lawyers asked the Supreme Court to permit him to complete his entire prison term under home confinement, with tracking devices.

They also petitioned that he be permitted to leave his home for medical care, saying he demanded ongoing care for pulmonary infections and other illnesses.

Context of Sentencing

Bolsonaro was convicted of orchestrating a conspiracy aimed at maintaining his control after he was defeated in the 2022 election to his left-wing rival, Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he was aware of a plan which included plans to assassinate the current president and his running partner, Alckmin, and to detain and kill Alexandre de Moraes - the High Court judge who has been presiding over Bolsonaro's trial.

The plot was stopped because it couldn't obtain the support of the army and air force commanders. Lula was took office without problem on January 1st, 2023.

But a following week, on January 8th, numerous Bolsonaro supporters attacked and damaged official structures in the capital, Brasília.

The security forces stepped in and around fifteen hundred individuals were detained.

The judges found that the protesters had been incited by the former president whose scheme, they said, was for the country's army to take action, bring back stability and return him to office.

At the moment, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the decades-long sentence extremely harsh.

He was also prohibited from seeking elected position until 2060 - eight years after the end of his sentence.

The one-time head of state called the trial a targeted investigation" and said it was intended to stop him running in the 2026 national vote.
